Journal Submission Guidelines

The Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments (JHPEE) accepts empirical and theoretical articles with relevance to human performance in extreme environments, defined as settings that possess extraordinary technological, social, and physical components that require significant human adaptation for successful interaction and performance. The publication reaches researchers, practitioners, and professionals from industry, the armed forces, and academic institutions around the world who specialize in issues related to extreme environments. Example areas include:

Engineering
Human-Environment Interface
Human Factors Psychology
Human-Technology Interfaces
Physiology

Psychiatry
Psychology
Sensation and Perception
Sociology
Team Performance


Submission types include, but are not limited to, the following:

Original Research - Original research articles and reports addressing human behavior and performance in extreme environments.

Reprinted Materials - Previously available articles, technical reports, and other materials are reprinted to expose members to classic or hard to find articles.

Learning Through Experience - Experience-based articles of operational personnel in the "field." These anecdotal descriptions serve to showcase activities and events in extreme environments through the first-hand experiences of individuals.

Book and Publication Reviews - Reviews and critiques of books, research reports, and other publications.


Format for Submissions

General Format
Format submissions according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition, 2001). In general, double-space entire submission including references, apply a minimum 1-inch margin on all sides, and do not justify the right margin.

Text Citations and References
Use in-text citations with author names and date (e.g., Smith & Jones, 1990). Alphabetize reference list (do not number) and format similar to examples below:

Journal article:
Smith, J. T., & Jones, R. S. (1990). Human performance in space. Journal
       of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
, 4(2), 25-50.

Entire book:
Johnson, A. H. (1995). Performance under the sea: Making a difference
       in extreme environments.
New York: Smith Publishing.

Article or chapter in an edited book:

Submissions via Electronic Mail (preferred):
Send the following via email to society@hpee.org:

  • Email message containing author's contact information and brief description of the submission.
  • Attach manuscript text in Microsoft Word format (PC-based) or other word processing software compatible with MS Word.
  • Attach any corresponding graphics, figures, or tables (jpeg or tiff format preferred).

Submissions via Regular Mail:
Send the following to the address below:

  • Cover letter containing author's contact information and brief description of the submission.
  • Computer disk(s) containing manuscript and all graphics, figures, or tables (jpeg or tiff format preferred).
  • Three (3) paper copies of manuscript
