Academic Research

The following sites represent university-affiliated research organizations, laboratories, centers and societies around the world conducting research related to extreme environments.

Caudwell Extreme Everest
Caudwell Xtreme Everest is a research project coordinated by the UCL Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme (CASE) environment medicine - doctors and scientists studying human systems stretched to breaking point in extreme environments to increase our understanding of critically ill patients.
Centre for Altitude Space and Extreme Environment Medicine
The Centre for Altitude Space and Extreme Environment Medicine (CASE Medicine) is a group of clinicians and scientists with specialist interests and training in the medicine and physiology of extreme environments.
Center for Biological Defense (CBD)
Affiliated with the University of South Florida, and components at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas Tech University, the CBD coordinates multidisciplinary biodefense research and tranlates this research from the bench to the field in support of Federal Homeland Defense initiatives in the United States.
Computing Research Laboratory at New Mexico State University
Affiliated with NMSU's Department of Psychology, the Computing Research Laboratory (CRL) is a non-profit, self-supporting research enterprise committed to basic research and software development in advanced computing applications and is conducting research on the effects of extreme environmental conditions on war fighters.
Goup Performance Environments Research (GROUPER) Laboratory at Purdue University
The GROUPER lab studies multiple research areas, with focus on knowledge sharing, information flow, and expertise development / coordination in complext task environments. Efforts a Purdue University are centered on field studies of knowledge, sharing and distiributed team coordination, supplemented by growing efforts to develop appropriate quantitative simulations of team behavior using feedback control models.
Human Factors & Systems at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
Affiliated with ERAU's Department of Human Factors & Systems, this site provides information about research in multiple extreme settings.
Human Interactions in Space
Human Interactions in Space is a research program dedicated to identifying and characterizing the psychosocial issues that affect the health and well-being of space crewmembers and the mission control personnel that support them. The program goal is to develop countermeasures that will enhance the safety and success of people involved with long-duration space missions. Project members are affiliated with the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and the Northern California Institute for Research and Education (NCIRE) at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco (SFVAMC).
Institute for Simulation and Training (IST)
Affiliated with the University of Central Florida, IST's mission is to advance the science of modeling and simulation.
Laboratory for Health and Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Affiliated with the University of Minnesota.
MIT2: Minds in Technology & Machines in Thought
A collection of laboratories based at the University of Central Florida including the MultiDisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) Lab, the Transportation Research Group (TRG) and the Center for Applied Human Factors in Aviation (CAHFA).
Reversal Theory Society
Society focused on sharing resources and findings on research and the application of Reversal Theory--a theory of the structure of mental life. Website includes an overview of Reversal Theory, documents from past Reversal Theory conferences, a complete Reversal Theory bibliography, and connections to others active in this research area.
Stress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR)
STAR is a multidisciplinary, international organization of researchers who share an interest in problems of stress, coping, and anxiety.
Team Performance Laboratory (TPL)
Based at the University of Central Florida, TPL has a staff composed of research scientists, psychologists, engineers, software developers, and research assistants dedicated to the study of Human Factors Psychology and Engineering, Ergonomics, Usability Engineering, and Cognitive Psychology.
