Intern/Cooperative Education Positions at NTSB
Mission: The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent Federal agency charged by
Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant
accidents in the other modes of transportation -- railroad, highway, marine and pipeline -- and
issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents. The NTSB provides
investigators to serve as U.S. Accredited Representatives as specified in international treaties for
aviation accidents overseas involving U.S.-registered aircraft, or involving aircraft or major
components of U.S. manufactures. Since its inception in 1967, the NTSB has investigated more
than 100,000 aviation accidents and thousands of surface transportation accidents. In so doing,
it has become one of the world's premier accident investigation agencies. On call 24 hours a day,
365 days a year, NTSB investigators fly to every corner of the world to investigate significant
accidents.
Student Career Experience Program (SCEP): Students receive excepted service appointments
at the GS-2/3/4 grades levels without limitation while in this program. Also known as the Co-op
program, SCEP provides students an opportunity to work in an occupation directly related to their
educational and academic career goals. Upon completion of 640 hours of work and the degree
requirements, students are eligible for non-competitive conversion to a temporary, term, career
conditional, or career appointment at the GS-5/7 grade level. Graduate level students are
appointed at the 5/7 and converted at the GS-9/11 grade levels (contingent upon evaluation
of their education and experience). A written agreement between the school, student and NTSB is
required. This agreement must include the nature of the work assignment and the work- study
schedule.
Desired Attributes: Reliable, good personality and good communication skills to include
Knowledge of computer software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Duties: Assist in
government services and press releases, mail control, congressional inquires and functions
including liaison with public and private transportation agencies; to assist in the public and family
relations with regards to the mission of NTSB etc...which includes the review of the daily
congressional record.
Basic Qualification:
Enrollment in an accredited college on a least a half-time basis. Ability to execute a cooperative
education agreement and complete 640 work hours prior to graduation.

2) a copy of college transcripts or list of college course work completed, to show how the minimum
educational requirements have been met.
