Welcome to the Society for Human Performance in Extreme Environments

We are an interdisciplinary forum for scientists, practitioners, operational personnel, students, and other professionals with expertise and interest in human performance in complex, high stress, and demanding environments and occupations.

Our mission is to lower the boundaries between scientific disciplines, to encourage collaboration between academic and applied domains, and discover new ways to use science and technology to push beyond the boundaries of human abilities.

What is an Extreme Environment?

We define extreme environments as:

Settings that possess extraordinary physical, psychological, and interpersonal demands that require significant human adaptation for survival and performance

Example environments include space, high-altitudes, Polar regions, deserts, underground, open ocean, and underwater. Furthermore, a number of extreme activities and occupations occur in these environments such as spaceflight, aviation, mountaineering, military operations, firefighting, emergency services, search & rescue, hazardous materials handling, mining, diving, and a variety of extreme sports.

Please join us. Together we can help men and women explore at the edges of existence safely and productively and bring humanity one step closer to achieving its greatest potential.
